One of our favorite months of the year is celebrated in April. A lot of people love Easter and the emergence of spring, but we love to celebrate National Garden Month. April is the perfect time to refresh your garden, or begin a new one. Whether you have a tiny victory container garden, or a huge vegetable, fruit and herb garden, National Garden Month is the perfect month for you.
What to Do for National Garden Month
People have been celebrating gardens for millennia. In fact, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon were world famous around 500 B.C. It is said that King Nebuchadnezzar had the gardens built because he loved plants and flowers. Nearly 1000 years later, the Italians developed botanical gardening to study the use of medicinal plants. Garden clubs sprung up all over the United States in the 19th century, and gardening became a national pastime.
If you want to celebrate National Garden Month, there are a lot of things you can do. You can begin to plan out the garden you want to build this year. You also need to look at planting times for the various plants in your garden. The NYC area is in Zone 7b, which means that you have a couple of weeks to think about what you want to plant. The traditional last frost in the New York City area is in mid-April.
Once you’ve plotted out what you want to plant, and when it is safe to plant, you’ll be ready to prepare the ground for planting. Make sure you have all of the tools you will need, including the right soil and fertilizer. Gardening brings such joy and stress relief, you may want to garden year round!
